As $83 trillion changes hands over the next twenty years, the next generation will transform the wealth industry.
The shake up wonโt just be in how they spend their money but also how they connect with peers.
Expect more exclusive family office communities and informal meetups.
Expect fewer large conferences filled with men in blue suits. Fewer slide decks and lanyards.
Stripping out the hubris lets people relaxโand real connection follows. Fresh formats will only pick up speed.
Australian-based family office network The Table Club created a Next Gens program built around travel experiences.
They host trips for exclusively younger members to destinations like Tokyo and Mumbai, where they meet local family leaders and experience new business cultures.
In London, Family Office Socials (see podcast below) follows a low-key approach, hosting informal drinks at neighborhood restaurants, or arranging guest speakers for small groups, all done via WhatsApp.
Next-gen inclusion is becoming top of mind at established networks too, with SFO Alliance deliberately pursuing next-gen involvement at their annual SFO Week through a dedicated dinner, and younger moderators for their breakout sessions.ย ย
This week, Mr Family Office spoke with a new private community that is focused on next-gen family offices and business leaders, Heritage.
It was co-founded in 2023 by Ammar Amdani, managing director at his familyโs own Miami-based office, along with two other 2nd-gen family leaders, who all felt the existing offerings werenโt suited for next-gen like themselves.ย
โThereโs no playbook for running a family office, and no real community for the honest, behind-the-scenes conversations families need to have about succession, capital allocation, and family dynamics,โ says Amdani. โHeritage was built to change that.โ
The founders had been disappointed in the family office conferences they attended, both with the sell-side guest speakers and the makeup of fellow attendees.
โMany family office events fall short by featuring speakers that are out of step with how todayโs family offices are actually deploying capital and seem to do little to no vetting of their attendees.โย
When Heritage started to arrange their own small gatherings for members, the speaker selection had to be hyper-relevant.ย
โWe bring in speakers family offices can imagine collaborating with. Hearing how an endowment allocates isnโt all that relevant to a single family office navigating direct deals, venture, or next-gen transitions.โย
While smaller gatherings offer value to existing members, Amdani also wants Heritage to reach more next-gens that feel existing events donโt suit them.ย
To do this theyโve launched a series of family office summits.
โLarger events create access to broader networks and fresh perspectives. Smaller gatherings foster deeper, more candid discussions. Heritage blends both through exclusive, member-only experiences alongside high-impact summits that connect top family office leaders worldwide.โ
Heritageโs next-gen focus is evident in the choice of guest speakers, like finance podcaster Anthony Pompliano and Netflix star realtor Ryan Serhant.
โExpertise is table-stakes. Beyond credentials, a strong speaker brings stories that others can learn from. Theyโve navigated real decisions around partnering with others, living with the consequences of making bad decisions, and overcoming the tough times to have a successful outcome - and theyโre willing to share what they learned, not just what worked.ย
Amdani wants speakers that challenge the room through honest dialogue and hopes attendees can leave thinking differently.
He also aims to ensure the audience mix is on point, with only vetted next-gen family office principals and family business executives in attendance.
โVetting is everything. Every attendee is carefully screened to ensure they align with the values of our community, creating a space where conversations can be open, honest, and productive.โ
Beyond the event itself, attendees receive a summary of key insights, and gain access to a digital networking platform with the aim to keep conversations going well after.ย
Not that Amdani believes this will ever be a substitute for Heritageโs gatherings themselves.
โTechnology will enhance how we connect, but in-person experiences will remain the gold standard for building relationships and driving meaningful conversations.โ
